The Royal Briefing
“Where’s the umbrella?” the King kept asking. “Where’s the umbrella?” The rain was torrential, and the King was getting drenched. This is the viral moment of the week.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla have been on a Caribbean tour for nearly a week now. On Sunday, Their Majesties were attending an Independence Day parade at a stadium in Antigua and Barbuda. Suddenly, as it often happens in the Caribbean, a tropical rainstorm broke.
An aide carrying an umbrella quickly approached Camilla. She took the umbrella and took cover. But no one came for Charles. For all the officials around him, it’s incredible that no umbrella could be dispatched to the King who was understandably frustrated. Luckily, that did not matter. The storm subsided quickly and Charles went back to his spot in the parade.
As always, the King handled the situation gracefully. “I think I’m about to grow watercress on my suit,” he told the Antiguan prime minister with a smile on his face.
Yet this moment was a fitting metaphor for the King’s current predicament. Through no fault of his own, the Crown finds itself in a moment of crisis from the ongoing saga over the Sussexes to the very serious problem that is Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
“The late Queen Elizabeth II famously had her annus horribilis in 1992,” says Katie Nicholl, the co-host of The Royals Uncensored. “Now her son, King Charles III, is going through his own version. The last two years, if you will, have been his anni horribiles.”
To start, let’s not forget that the King has been fighting cancer since 2024. While his treatment has thus far been a success, he is not out of the woods. Although he is supported by Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales, it is still an incredibly difficult ordeal to go through – all the more so given his responsibilities.
And the latest news has not made things easier.
We’d tell you more, but discretion is a royal virtue.
